To summarise those who've played Blue Planet, play this, those who've played Freespace 2, play Blue Planet, those who've not played Freespace 2, play Freespace 2. While not a good show of the gameplay, this video shows how pretty the game is, though it's 2 years out of date. Greatest of these campaigns is Blue Planet, which takes up where Freespace 2 leaves off, finally giving those of us pining for Freespace 3 some closure, and potentially answering the biggest question of all, you know the one I mean. Sorry about waxing lyrical, but WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS. If you have the FSO installer ( ) then it will be listed as on of the install options 3 level 1 7 yr. This includes entire Battlestar Galactica campaigns, the Wings of Dawn Saga the haunting Vassago's Dirge, with genres ranging from horror to comedy, and gamestyles from solo shoot-em-up to RTS. To upgrade the graphics you need a mod called the MediaVPs this is a mod built to replace in game assets with higher fidelity replacements and is also used by most mods. For 6 and a smidgen of your lowly british pounds, you not only get a great looking revamp of the original game (which scored an 8.9 on ign), but a revamp of Freespace 1, revamps of all the expansion packs (including the incredible Silent Threat: Reborn), and most importantly, over a hundred campaigns, some of which are of incredible quality, even better than the original. You might be aware of the notorious Freespace Source Code Project, which is basically pushing and improving a decade old engine into a modern game, with beautiful graphics, and ever-expanding gameplay possibilities. Those who've played Blue Planet will be exalted to hear this, I know it was my most anticipated release of 2012-3, and so far it hasn't disappointed, it's better than I could have expected, though buggy.įor those of you who are staring at the above paragraph in bemusement, Blue Planet is a mod for Violition's Freespace 2, the BEST SPACE SIM EVER. No way would I give a stranger access to my computer. The customer service (clearly a foreign-based phone bank - I could hardly hear because of the background chatter of other operators on other phones) wanted me to allow them to link into my computer to review “whether there is something wrong with my hard drive” or the software itself. Inexplicably, the date in the photo data itself (found via get info) has been changed. So some of my son’s birthday pictures which should be in, say, Feb 2015 are now scattered throughout 2015 so that I can’t find them all at once under the same date. The App went through my photos and changed the dates of some so that they no longer appear grouped by date when I select “Photos” from the iphoto left-hand menu. Farrar, then Miss Petherbridge, and newly graduated from Smith, got a job as secretary to John O’Hara Cosgrave, editor of the magazine section of the Sunday World. The present square shape and pattern of black-and-white squares, as well as the reversed name, were developed before 1920, when Mrs. It scored a mild success, and the puzzle was made a regular feature of the paper. It was shaped like a diamond, had no black squares, contained thirty-two words, and was called a word-cross puzzle. That honor goes to one Arthur Winn, an editor of the old New York Sunday World, in which, on December 21, 1913, the first crossword puzzle appeared. Farrar, who gave us to understand at once that she was not the inventor of the crossword puzzle. We stopped in at the Times shrine the other day and had a pleasant, reminiscent chat with Mrs. Probably the most important person in the world of the crossword puzzle is a slight, charming sixty-one-year-old woman named Margaret Farrar, who helped launch the craze in her youth and is currently the revered crossword-puzzle editor of the Times. Like mah-jongg, which came along a bit earlier, crossword puzzles might have been expected to suffer a sudden and permanent loss of favor when the force of the craze had spent itself instead, they have endured and prospered, and though they are not much talked about nowadays, they continue to have their millions of ardent addicts. It was exactly thirty-five years ago that the great crossword-puzzle craze began to sweep this country. Margaret Farrar, the first crossword editor for the Times, in 1968. They usually emit a hissing sound when alerted and have 60 HP. In the original games, Imps have brown skin, red eyes, and spikes on their shoulders, elbows and knees. The Imp is the basic demonic enemy and common in all of the games because they appear in almost every level, where they appear with a relatively humanoid appearance. Commando classes are named: Troop, Commando and Assassin. The Zombie classes are named: Zombie Private, Zombie Lieutenant and Zombie Captain. In the Doom RPG two classes of zombies exist, each with three variants corresponding to their difficulties. The Former Commando does not appear in Doom 64. The only real physical difference is that the Sergeant's pants are a slightly darker shade than the Former Humans (which makes them harder to discern within Doom 64's darkness). In Doom 64 there are no real changes in behavioral patterns amongst the zombies they simply walk and shoot. They also emit a "sour lemon smell" when killed or nearby. However the former commandos depicted there (referred to as Clyde) are not zombiefied humans, rather they are either genetically engineered human copies or human traitors who have been genetically altered to look alike. In the Doom novels, zombies are found in various forms, ranging from former civilians to soldiers. Appears in Doom II, Final Doom and the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Doom. Former commando / Heavy Weapon Dude / Chaingunner: 70 HP, dark red armor - wields a chaingun that he will drop when killed.Appear in Doom, Doom II, Doom 64 and Final Doom. Former human sergeant / Shotgun guy: 30 HP, wears black armor with bald head - wields a shotgun that he will drop when killed.Appears in Doom, Doom II, Doom 64 and Final Doom. Former human / Zombieman: 20 HP, wears beige armor and has a green crewcut - wields a rifle, will drop an ammo clip when killed.Three different forms of zombies are featured in the Doom games: Moving out of their line of sight, such as hiding behind a wall or using a lift, will break their lock and cease their firing, and they will be on the move to seek out their foe. Commandos, however, once within line of sight of their foe, will continuously fire their chaingun, only rotating to adjust to their target's movements. Owing to their usage of bullet weapons, zombies can be easily tricked into engaging in monster infighting with other creatures as well as their own kind.įormer humans and sergeants will close the distance on their foe, and then circle, pausing every few steps to fire a shot. They are the only non-demonic enemies in the game as well as the only ones who drop ammunition (half the ammo of a fresh clip or a weapon pick-up) when killed (the dropped ammunition, however, can be lost if a door or crushing ceiling comes down on it). Zombies are undead soldiers who have been turned into brain-dead killing machines by the demons. Random maps are not so well done in AOW:SM, but usable. Single Player maps have the advantage that they are quite different and there are a lot of them. The campaign of AOW:SM is very well done, and should be played at least once. (This was all cut from AOW3, since it is 'unbalanced' and 'allows exploits' in multiplayer mode.) As a fan of XL maps I also find the transport units (Zeppelin, etc.) really fine. There are a lot of units and special features. (AOW3 is more taxing for the PC, but also beautiful). So - AOW:SM still is a favorite game for me, and I find it simply beautiful even with its simple bitmap graphic. The action based alignment is also a major difference. This is not as I see Halflings!Īlso they 'balanced' AOW3, and the racial specialties (Titan, Dragons, and so on) are gone - only the class matters. This means, that even Halflings have 'Warlords' and 'Berserkers' (?). While all AOW games are Strategy games, I play them more as an ongoing RP game with a strategic background.įor this reason I am not completely happy with AOW3: They have 'optimized' the game for multiplayer games. I never played it as multiplayer - in part because my friends either do not play AOW games or have no time for it. I love the setting in AOW:SM, including the (from AOW3 boards) 'useless' wizard in his tower. I love to play AOW (3 and SM) as sort of a role playing game. They are that big, that I forget the details and so the map is after several months still interesting. I have several maps (extra large) which I play. AoW1 was fun so decided to finally get it. Ewmarch: When you sit down for a game of AoW Shadow Magic, how do you usually set your game up? Scenarios? Random Maps? Campaign even?Ĭurious because I just picked up Shadow Magic. Some convolution plugins like Altiverb and Waves IR-1 use proprietary formats, although they are capable of importing regular WAV or AIFF files as well. The recorded IR is nothing more an audio file that can be imported into a convolution software to recreate the sampled space digitally. For more accurate results it is common to use a sine-sweep across the audible frequency range. This is achieved by playing back a burst (impulse) of a full range of frequencies within the space and recording it. The impulse responses or IRs are captured by recording how a space responds to a full range of frequencies (typically 20Hz to 20,000Hz). It could be described as an acoustic ‘photograph’, where, instead of capturing a space visually, it is captured aurally. Impulse responses allow us to capture and store the acoustic characteristics of a space (or piece of sound altering equipment). Over the recent years, convolution has been widely used to recreate the reverberation of spaces, the sound of hardware units (reverb units, equalisers, tape machines, guitar amps, etc) and in creative sound design. Convolution of spectra means that each point in the discrete frequency spectrum of input a is convolved with every point in the spectrum b. It is different from the plain multiplication of two sounds where a single sample of the first sound is multiplied by the corresponding single sample of a second sound.Ĭurtis Roads ( The Computer Music Tutorial) describes convolution as:Ĭonvolution of two audio signals is equivalent to filtering the spectrum of one sound by the spectrum of another sound. What is convolution?Ĭonvolution is the process where a single sample of a sound is multiplied by every sample of another sound. This article is a description of the general concepts behind recording good impulse responses and should be easily adaptable to any convolution/de-convolution tool. This not only helps ‘personalise’ your mixes, but is extremely useful in post-production and in the design of new sounds.Įach of the above mentioned plugins need slightly different techniques for creating a custom library of impulse responses. They are usually packaged with large and useful libraries of impulse responses (more on what all this means below), but what makes them really powerful is the fact that it is quite easy to record and use your own impulse responses. Some of the most common ones include Audio Ease Altiverb, Logic’s Space Designer, Avid TL Space, Waves IR-1 and McDsp Revolver.

On the other hand, I think Omni is leaving some opportunities on the table to create strong stances on how the program ought to be used. On the one hand, it's wonderful as a user to be able to tweak the program to look and behave how I like. As mentioned above, The Omni Group has a track record of listening to its users and often implementing features, or providing options wherever possible. While my primary focus is not on features of the app, there are a few areas I wanted to contribute to.Ĭreate an opinionated design. The goal is not strictly to design the "Big Sur" or "iOS 14" versions of OmniFocus.Įxplore opportunities for improving the user flow where possible. I want to narrow that gap.Įmploy best practices from Apple's Human Interface Guidelines for each platform, while maintaining consistency and keeping the Omni brand in mind. Currently there is a significant gap between the user experience on iPhone and iPad when compared to Mac. The answer, it turns out, is not so simple.ĭesign a consistent UX that scales from iOS, to iPadOS, to macOS. So I wanted to see what it might take to re-imagine the OmniFocus suite of apps. As popular competitors like Things win acclaim for their clean, modern appearance, OmniFocus – for all of its power – appears stuck in another time period. Whether it's multiple contexts (now tags), batch editing on iOS, floating time zone support ( likely thanks to CGP Grey), or collaborative tasks (soon? please?) – all of these started as user requests.īut lately there has been a growing demand for the company to rethink the user experience and interface of OmniFocus. And to Omni's credit: they seem to listen. This is, of course, nonsense.īut occasionally trends appear in the cacophonous feature request threads on Omni's Forums. And you feel that somehow you understand the tool better than other people, including the developers themselves. You start to have ideas for new features – features that would, of course, suit you. It’s easy to develop a sense of entitlement when you use a tool for so long. Originally designed around the Getting Things Done methodology, and now on its third major version, OmniFocus has grown to be one of the most feature-rich task managers on any platform – far surpassing the common, but inadequate title of a to-do list.Īs an OmniFocus fan for nearly a decade I can sympathize with the strong opinions that grow out of being a heavy user of something. Perhaps Omni's most popular product is OmniFocus – a rich suite of task manager applications for macOS, iOS, iPadOS and web. It's the classic "Adobe" issue: Never remove, only add. This means any significant changes that Omni makes risk alienating those users – who trust and demand the most from these tools. And when you consider that many of their products are pro-grade, best-of-class examples in each of their categories, you end up with not just passionate users, but demanding ones. Omni's focus on products and platforms for which they clearly have a passion in turn engenders a lot of the same passion and love from their userbase. There are few developers that have as rich of a history as The Omni Group with a product line that can trace its roots back to the earliest days of Mac OS X, Rhapsody, and even NeXTSTEP. CHARON's last studio album was "Songs For The Sinners", which came out in 2005.Īll the bandmembers still have a passion for playing and they all will continue their careers in music. Our moment ends now."ĬHARON released five studio albums and a compilation album, "A-Sides, B-Sides & Suicides", where you will find the band's last-recorded song, "The Cure". Everything has its moments but nothing lasts forever. There are lots of good memories and tours behind and above all, great fans. CHARON had been a measure for everything that we've done in our lives. "Playing in the band has been a solid part of our lives for nearly two decades. Years of hanging loose from the noose had eaten up most of our energy and creativity. But we did not have enough heart and passion to light up the final fire and to finish the record. In the summer 2010, 'a new beginning' with a new guitarist worked brilliantly and we even wrote a full album of songs. "After the last studio album we should have gotten a grip in time and not to delay the decisions we faced in the end of 2009. And a 100% satisfactory outcome would no longer be possible," the band explains in a statement. Doing things forced or not straight from the heart has never been a band practice for us. We are forced to admit that we have no longer anything new to give to the genre in which CHARON has operated. "This shouldn't be a really big surprise for anyone. The group will play the final gigs as a favor to its loyal fans and finally wrap up nearly a nearly two-decade-long of music career. Finnish gothic metallers CHARON, who formed in 1992 in Raahe, Finland, will disband after this summer's performances. |
